Revenue management fundamentals
Start with the bigger picture.
Understand the ideas behind revenue management before exploring how HouseCount RMS supports your operation.
What is revenue management?
Revenue management is the practice of using demand, available inventory and booking patterns to make decisions about pricing and availability. For a hotel, that inventory is room nights; for a theater, it is seats for a specific performance. The aim is to improve the revenue earned from limited inventory while considering the operation’s commercial goals.
Why does revenue management matter for hotels and live entertainment?
A room night or performance seat cannot be sold after its date has passed. Demand also changes over time. Revenue management helps teams recognize stronger and weaker demand, evaluate pricing choices and make decisions while there is still an opportunity to influence the outcome.
What is static pricing?
Static pricing means keeping a price fixed for a defined period or using a preset rate schedule, with changes made manually rather than in response to current demand. For example, a hotel might use set weekday and weekend rates, or a theater might keep the same ticket prices throughout a show’s booking period.
What is dynamic pricing?
Dynamic pricing means adjusting prices as conditions change, rather than keeping one fixed price throughout the booking period. Demand, booking pace, remaining inventory and time until arrival or performance can all inform the decision. A price may rise, fall or stay the same.
What is autonomous pricing?
Autonomous pricing uses software to monitor demand and update prices within the strategy, limits and controls set by your team. In HouseCount RMS, Autopilot supports automatic rate updates, while your team can guide pricing and make manual changes when needed. This reduces routine pricing work and gives revenue managers more time for strategy, analysis and decisions that benefit from their expertise.
What is forecasting?
Forecasting uses historical performance, current bookings, booking pace and other demand signals to estimate future business. Hotels may forecast occupied rooms, arrivals, departures and room revenue; theaters may forecast ticket sales, attendance and ticket revenue. Teams use these estimates to inform pricing, staffing, budgeting and planning, and update them as conditions change.
How is automation used in revenue management?
Automation can update rates based on demand, open and close rate plans according to configured rules, and push rates to a property management system (PMS) and connected distribution channels. It can also reduce repetitive monitoring and reporting tasks. Your team defines the strategy and controls, reviews performance and handles exceptions; the available actions depend on the system and its integrations.
What is a revenue management system (RMS)?
An RMS is software that helps teams analyze demand and make pricing decisions. Depending on the system, it can support forecasting, pricing recommendations, reporting and automated updates. HouseCount RMS combines pricing recommendations and automation with tools that let your team guide decisions.
What are some key performance indicators (KPIs) in revenue management?
Common hotel KPIs include:
Average daily rate (ADR): room revenue divided by rooms sold.
Occupancy: rooms sold divided by available rooms, expressed as a percentage.
Revenue per available room (RevPAR): room revenue divided by available rooms.
Total revenue per available room (TRevPAR): total operating revenue divided by available rooms.
Gross operating profit per available room (GOPPAR): gross operating profit divided by available rooms.
For live entertainment, useful measures include average paid ticket price, paid attendance, percentage of sellable seats sold and revenue per available seat (RevPAS). Compare revenue measures with costs and contribution, using consistent definitions and the same reporting period.

How does HouseCount RMS adapt pricing to demand?
HouseCount RMS continuously analyzes booking trends, available inventory, and real-time demand to recommend room rates. It responds to changing conditions throughout the booking cycle, helping your team identify and act on revenue opportunities.
Can we automate rates and still make manual changes?
Yes. HouseCount RMS supports automatic rate updates through Autopilot, as well as rates your team pushes manually. Revenue managers retain the flexibility to make manual overrides and put group protections in place.
What happens after we make a manual rate change?
HouseCount RMS treats the updated rate as the new starting point for future recommendations. It monitors how demand and bookings develop from there, rather than reverting to an earlier recommendation. Your team's pricing decisions inform what the system recommends next, reducing the need for ongoing override management.
Can HouseCount RMS support different types of hotels and portfolios?
Yes. HouseCount RMS supports independent, economy, budget and branded hotels, non-gaming resorts, tribal hospitality and casino hotels. Multi-property tools and Campus view help teams work across related properties while managing property-level pricing.
Will HouseCount RMS work with our property management system?
HouseCount RMS is designed to integrate with property management systems. Luxe Pricing supports most major PMS providers, and our in-house development team can build custom interfaces when needed. We’ll review your provider, version, data requirements and workflow before confirming the integration approach.
Is the goal always to achieve the highest occupancy?
Not necessarily. Selling more rooms at a lower price can produce a different result from selling fewer rooms at a higher price. Review occupancy together with average daily rate (ADR), revenue per available room (RevPAR) and contribution after costs. The right balance depends on your property’s goals and demand.
How should hotels evaluate the results of a pricing strategy?
Start with a clear baseline and a review period. Track room revenue, occupancy, ADR and RevPAR alongside distribution costs, contribution and time spent managing rates. Account for seasonality, events, inventory changes and market conditions when comparing results; a revenue increase alone does not establish what caused it.
Live entertainment & theaters
Every performance. A pricing opportunity.
Explore dynamic ticket pricing in the context of your venue, audience and performance schedule.
Why consider dynamic pricing for live entertainment?
Demand varies by performance date, booking window and audience interest. HouseCount RMS helps teams respond as ticket sales develop, bringing a more consistent approach to pricing across a show’s run.
Does dynamic pricing always mean increasing ticket prices?
No. Depending on demand and remaining inventory, the right decision may be to raise a price, hold it steady or consider a more accessible price point. Evaluate ticket revenue alongside attendance and your production’s goals.
Has HouseCount RMS been used for theaters and live productions?
Yes. HouseCount RMS supports live entertainment, including Las Vegas shows, Broadway productions and more. The 400-seat Las Vegas theater example below describes a move from manual ticket pricing to automated dynamic pricing.
Can HouseCount RMS connect with our ticketing system?
The published theater case study describes an integration with Ticketmaster. Compatibility with your ticketing platform, seating categories and workflow should be reviewed with our team before planning an implementation.
What should our team consider before introducing an RMS?
Bring your performance schedule, sellable inventory, seating categories, ticketing platform and current pricing process. Agree on the outcomes that matter—ticket revenue, attendance, contribution and time spent managing prices—and how you will evaluate them.
Should every performance have the same ticket prices?
Different dates and times can attract different levels of demand. A weekend performance may sell differently from a midweek show, even within the same production. Reviewing each performance’s sales pattern helps teams decide whether a shared price or a different approach makes sense.
What does revenue per available seat tell us?
Revenue per available seat, or RevPAS, divides ticket revenue by the number of seats available for the performances being measured. It combines the effects of paid attendance and ticket yield. Compare like-for-like periods and use it alongside attendance, average ticket price and contribution.

What should we define before starting an RMS project?

Identify the manual work you want to reduce and the measures you will use to evaluate progress. These priorities help shape a useful demo and implementation discussion.
How should we build the business case for HouseCount RMS?
Compare your current pricing process with the outcomes you want to improve. Consider potential revenue contribution, software and implementation costs, existing fees you could actually avoid, and the effort required from your team. The What’s Possible page can help you explore scenarios; use your own operating assumptions when making a decision.
